Topic 23 - Where to from here?

We finally made it to the final topic of 23 Things! Definitely not as painful as I first thought it was going to be.

I found it very useful to look at new applications and also to revisit some that I have only ever briefly looked.

Overall it was definitely a worthwhile task and I look forward to a 23 Things v2.0 :-)

Topic 22 - Web 2.0 Tools

Out of the list I picked Fixya.

This could be the ultimate tool in having questions answered about anything - but I would mainly be looking for technical info on PC problems myself.

I did a search on accidently deleting files and was given and answer and a link to a site to download an undeleting program.

This site could be very useful in a library setting as we are asked many different questions inlcuding "how do I undelete files" on a daily basis.

Topic 21 - Web Based Applications

Google Docs could be a very helpful tool especially if you have to move around a lot and don't want to carry USB drives etc. with you.

It's also a very handy way to share information as long as the recipients have a Google account. If I didn't, I'd prefer to have the information emailed to me so I wouldn't have to sign up for another account.

I guess the only downside is if you don't have network access to log into Google Docs, then a USB backup is mandatory.

Topic 20 - Second Life

I have seen Second Life in action late last year when we had a play as a workgroup. It looks like a lot of fun especially when you finally decide how you want your character to look, which I would imagine would be quite a task for some. :-)

I might give it a try at home and see how I go! Wish me luck...

Topic 19 - Twitter & Yammer

I had signed up to Twitter a few months back and quickly vowed never to return (though I did give a couple weeks back). Seems pointless to me really.

Yammer has the same concept but I find this a little interactive and more interesting to the user. I like the way you are automatically put into a network, so this really makes this more of a work tool.

Topic 18 - Online Communities

Have been a Facebook and Myspace convert for a few years now. It's a great way to keep in touch, find old school friends and keep informed of things you want to be informed about!

I try to keep it a non-work related past time, so I'll think I'll pass on joining the TAFESA Library Facebook page!

Topic 17 - Library Thing

Cool idea! Need to spend more time on this to make an ultimate collection and want list! I'll never be searching for that book I forgot about or never did order!

Topic 16 - Image Generators

Love the Image Generators - have used Church Sign Generator (http://www.says-it.com/churchsigns/) many times, so when investigating different kinds, I decided to show off this one, Post-It Note Generator (http://postit.note.txt2pic.com/).

Example:

It says it all really....

Topic 15 - Podcasts

I've downloaded a few Podcasts over the years and find them to be a great tool especially if you are listening to something of interest.

I can see their usefulness in a learning sense as well.

Wasn't able to do my own but hopefully this will be sorted out soon.

Topic 14 - You Tube & Teacher Tube

You Tube is great from a personal point of view and Teacher Tube is a great way to access more "educational" videos.

Both have potential to be used from a library/earning perspective as long as you can find something relevant.

A nice treasure I found whilst exploring YouTube:

Topic 13 - iGoogle

iGoogle is a neat little tool especially if you can find gadgets of interest - seem to be quite a few that would be useful for a library perspective eg. book reviewer.

Only frustration is not being able to share but then again why should you share with anyone? It's your own little space and you don't have to share everything with everyone!! I guess that's what Facebook/Myspace is for!

Topic 12 - Tagging

Cool concept especially if you move from PC to PC or campus to campus (south to north or regional).

Topic 10 & 11 - Flickr

I look at Flickr almost daily due to a friend of mine uploading photos of Melbourne and the interesting characters, events and locations that make it so unique.

Here is an example of his work.

For more photos, go HERE

I personally don't use Flickr as I don't really take that many photos or don't take one's that I feel need publishing on Flickr (have enough on my Facebook page) but I love the concept of it and the interesting and weird stuff you can find on it.

Topic 8 & 9- Wiki's

Wiki's are interesting as you can interact with many different people - this interaction could be a useful tool between libraries and staff/students to keep everybody up to date with what's going within libraries and also as a question/answer type reference page.

The LEARN Sandbox was a hoot!

Topic 3 - RSS Feeds

I like the idea of RSS Feeds but the trouble is finding ones that interest me or actually work! Had quite a few feeds that wouldn't take or ones that were completely out of date.

All in all they are a great idea and can be a very useful tool to keep up to date on everything that interest you.
